Sleep – How it can affect weight loss or weight gain.

There are two hormones that have a significant impact on weight loss or weight gain: Leptin and Ghrelin. Leptin is a protein hormone that plays a key role in regulating energy intake and expenditure, including appetite and hunger, metabolism, and behavior. Ghrelin is a hunger-stimulating peptide and hormone. Ghrelin levels increase before meals and decrease after meals. In other words, the higher the Ghrelin level, the hungrier you feel. Lack of sleep (6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is recommended) creates an imbalance between these to hormones and the weight gain (Ghrelin) hormone increases. This will make you feel hungry during the night (raiding the fridge at 2AM) and in the morning. Getting the proper amount of sleep allows the weight loss hormone Leptin to build up and decrease Leptin resistance. A number of reasons can cause sleep interruptions such as going to sleep at different times, different types of foods (no junk food or fast foods late at night, full tummy but empty nutritional tank), what you drink and how much (avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks and sweet drinks late at night) and watching TV too close before bedtime can keep your mind active and awake. Sleep is also important for those of you who exercise regularly. During physical training you are tearing down muscle (don’t worry, you’re supposed to do that) and the repair work is accomplished thru foods, protein supplementation (Sculpting Protein) and sleep. Sleep time is repair time and your muscles will use proteins and amino acids during sleep to build and repair the muscle. During the first 45 minutes of sleep (deepest stage 4 or REM sleep), your body produces and releases the most hGH (human growth hormone), which helps repair muscle and connective tissues. Besides that, there’s a reason they say “getting some beauty rest.” The release of hGH can help you look and stay young. If you find that you’re going to bed hungry, make yourself a Sculpting Protein shake about an hour before bedtime for even more recovery.
